Program to download? Handbreak (Free) Download Here Download the GUI version for your Computer Type Once you have downloaded your program, launch the file and it will install within a minute.
Step 1
On the top left of the screen click “Source > Video File.” Browse your system and open your desired file once you have found it.
Step 2
On the far right side of the program you will see a list of “Presets.” Choose “iPod Legacy” which is located under “Apple > Legacy > iPod Legacy.”
Step 3
Here is where the fun begins and where the hours of testing came into play.
- Choose your “Destination.”
Under “Output Settings (Preset: iPod Legacy”
- Choose “M4v File.” & “iPod 5G Support.” (If M4v Doesn’t Work Use MP4).
Under “Picture Settings” Only change the following if need be, leave the rest as is.
- Crop > Automatic
- Width/Height > 480 x 320 (If the video you are converting has smaller resolution than this then convert to 320×240!)
Under “Video” Only change the following if need be, leave the rest as is.
- Video Codec: H.264 (x264)
- Frame Rate (FPS): Same As Source
- Avg Bitrate (kbps): 1500 (Seems To Work BEST). Optional: 2-Pass Encoding (Doubles Time But Can Make A Quality Difference).
Under “Audio & Subtitles” Only change the following if need be, leave the rest as is.
- Source: Automatic
- Audio Codec: AAC
- Mixdown: Stereo
- Samplerate (kHZ): 48
- Bitrate (Kbps): 160
The rest of the stuff you can play with if you’d like but those are the settings I used for my conversion.
F.A.Q.
- I tried converting a Mpeg4 video to a smaller Mpeg4 resolution video and got audio/video lag.
This is Extremely all too common, for some reason conversion between the same format disrupts something in the video and causes bad play back in most phones and even iPods (Hence why PSP Video 9 does not show Mp4 when you try to find a file).
Try lowering the bitrate (to 1,000) and the screen resolution to 320×240. - I tried converting an .Mkv and received audio/video lag or a black screen.
Believe it or not this is a fairly new file format, but it’s become all too popular for bootlegged music videos around the net. Some programs still have trouble with codecs when it comes to converting these. They seem to convert best to .Avi, so first convert it to Avi and then to M4v. Or find the same video in a different format to begin with.
Try lowering the bitrate (to 1,000) and the screen resolution to 320×240 as well. - The higher the resolution the better the quality right?
Not necessarily at all. If you’re converting a video that is 640×480 and convert it to the same 640×480 resolution then all you’re leaving is more work for your phone. I understand the login behind it, the pixels get compressed and shop up more clear and sharper. But if you compress these pixels in the conversion process wouldn’t the same thing happen? So why not just convert straight to a 480×320 and 320×240 and save your Bold/Curve/Storm the trouble? - The higher the bitrate/frame rate the better the quality?
Yes, that is true. However, RIM won’t release the Bold Video Playback Specifications. That is why we are left guessing and people like me spend hours working different settings. So far the best results have hovered around 1500 bitrate and the frame rate doesn’t seem to be an issue. Usually when you receive bad audio/video lag it is because the bitrate is simply way too high. - Can you do anything about the no audio or video/audio synch problems?
Trust me when I say that we are all trying. That’s why I test different settings on all these converters. If RIM would kindly reveal the specs to their video player it would save us all the headache. However they are trying to compete with the iPhone/iTouch and simply say it can play the same quality videos as their software can, which is a bit of a stretch.
